Phil Fisk will lead us in a series in  ‘Great Debates in Church History and Why They Matter: On God’s Sovereignty and Human Free Choice.’

Unwittingly, in most denominations and churches there are muddled ideas, dubious doctrines, and evangelical “shibboleths” that have been passed down from one generation to another. Besides differing views on baptism and the Lord’s Supper perhaps no other teaching in church history has been so vigorously debated and misunderstood, causing new church denominations to arise, than that of God’s Sovereignty and Human Free Choice.

In this series of nine lectures and group discussion we will read and seek to understand the writings of key thinkers in the debates on this topic throughout select periods of church history (Augustine/Pelagius, Duns Scotus/Ancient Greek Philosophy, Luther/Erasmus, Calvin/Pighius, Gomarus/Arminius, Edwards/Whitby).

In the end we will better understand the meaning of key terms and the use of well-nuanced language taken up in the debates.  If successful, we will better understand and identify our own presuppositions and “theological baggage” that we unwittingly bring to the debate.
