Sermon on July 16 by Pastor Roland Eskinazi
Scripture: Proverbs 4
We do not get wisdom by following daily tips for life. Wisdom is first a Person to know, and then a path to follow.
Are you on the path
1. HOW TO GET GOING! (v 1-9)
- Look back – and listen
Listen well to past voices. As in a marathon, those who have finished the race have something to say that we do not.
‘Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their faith and imitate their way of life.’ (Hebrews 13:7)
- ..so you may pass on and pass down
Wisdom (following Jesus) is costly. It seemed crazy for the disciples to leave all to follow a penniless carpenter.
Are you living decisively and intentionally? If your family is a place of grace, you sow seeds of wisdom in the next generation.
2. HOW TO KEEP GOING! (v10 – 19)
- Run from the misery that will destroy you
When you live in the dark, you cannot see the way things really are.
‘..they do not know what makes them stumble’ (v 19b)
Your choices matter! Lot chose the well-watered land and ignored Sodom, and through that choice his wife could not let go – eventually becoming a pillar of salt.
- Run to the mercy that will shape you
When you live in the light, it begins to transform you into authentic godliness
‘..shining ever brighter until the full light of day’ (v19a)
Real maturity comes as you take your eyes off yourself and gaze at Jesus.
3. HOW NOT TO GET LOST ALONG THE WAY! (v20-27)
- Watch the dashboard – and know yourself
Are you continually checking the control-center of your life?
‘For the Christian to keep his heart means for him to pay close attention to the direction in which his affections are moving.’
- Be devoted – and keep drinking
Is the fountain of your heart producing sweet or bitter words and behavior? (Mat. 12:34)
We must come as we are, moment by moment to drink from the fountain of life.
‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water ‘ (John 7:37)
Remember! ‘Who can say I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin? (Proverbs 20:9)
We cannot but Jesus can and does. He is the solution to an impure heart and He is the One who can keep those who trust in Him until we stand perfect before God. Know Jesus and follow Him!
